French Onion Soup is a classic and delicious dish made with caramelized onions, beef broth, and topped with melted cheese and toasted bread. It is typically served as a starter or appetizer.
Today we're going to make a very delicious French onion soup.
Ingredients:
- 5 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 3 cups chicken stock
- 3 cups beef stock
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/2 cup red wine (or apple juice)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Gruyere cheese (or other cheese of your choice)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Melt the butter in a large stock pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and saute until soft, about 10 minutes.
2. Add salt and honey to the onions and continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized.
3. Add the chopped garlic and saute for another 2 minutes.
4. Deglaze the pan with red wine (or apple juice), scraping the brown bits from the bottom of the pan.
5. Add the chicken stock, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
6. While the soup is simmering, prepare the cheese by grating it.
7. Taste the soup and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
8. Ladle the soup into oven-proof bowls and place them on a baking sheet. Add croutons and top with grated cheese.
9. Broil the soup in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2 minutes.
